The Venezuelan catcher was originally signed by the Astros but was shipped to Montreal before he reached the big leagues. He spent two seasons playing sparingly for the Expos and one with the Mariners before he re-signed with the Astros as a free agent in 2000.
He stayed in the Astros' system through 2005 and hit .212 while with Houston. However, Chavez (nicknamed Chammo) came up big in the postseason, hitting .400 during the playoffs, including a home run in the 2004 NLDS against Atlanta.
Chavez was waived during the spring before the 2006 season and spent time with the Orioles, Yankees, Pirates and Blue Jays.
