Shawn Chacon made more headlines on his way out than he did when he was here. A veteran righthander with the Rockies, Yankees and Pirates, Chacon set a record for most starts with a no-decision to begin the 2008 season while holding the fifth spot in the Astros rotation but a few bad starts led to his demotion to the bullpen.
He didn't take it well. Chacon pouted and, at times, outright defied instructions to warm up in relief. When the insubordination became blatant, Manager Cecil Cooper took the problem to General Manager Ed Wade who confronted Chacon in the Astros clubhouse where Chacon grabbed Wade by the throat and had to be pulled off of him.
"He needed to know who he was dealing with," said a heated Chacon to the press afterwards. He was released the next day.
Chacon never pitched in the majors again, and in 2009 faced criminal charges related to gambling and bad checks.
