Vinny Castilla was signed by the Braves organization in 1990. The Oaxaca, Mexico, native was playing for Saltillo's Mexican League ballclub. Picked up by the Rockies from the Braves in the 1992 expansion draft, Castilla flourished in the rarified air of Colorado, enjoying multiple All-Star and MVP years in the mid- to late-1990s.

Traded to the Devil Rays and unhappy there, he was released in May 2001 and played the remainder of that season in Houston, where his his bat and superb defense at third base contributed to a division pennant for the Astros, and a reaffirmation for Vinny.

Regrettably, the budget-conscious Astros let him go to free agency after the 2001 season. He later signed with the Braves. Castilla's brilliant 2001 comeback will long be remembered by all Astros fans.
