Vernon Christopher Carter was drafted by the White Sox out of high school in the 15th round of the 2005 amateur draft.

Carter played in the White Sox minor league system until 2008 when he had reached A-ball, then was traded to the Oakland A's in 2009. He had cups of coffee with the A's in 2010 and 2011, then in 2012 he got into 67 games for the major league club, slashing .239/.350/.514 with 16 HR. He was sent to the Astros in a package for Jed Lowrie just before Spring Training 2013.

In 2013 for the Astros, Carter hit 29 homers but struck out an MLB-leading 212 times. 2014 was his best year to date, hitting 37 homers with only 182 Ks. Thus far in 2015 he's reverted to his 2013 form, hitting only 18 homers through August.
