Primarily a catcher, Brand came up with the Pirates before he was taken by the Colt .45s in a supplemental draft. Due to his speed, Brand also filled in as an infielder and outfielder at times.

Brand had the first hit for the newly-named Astros in the Astrodome when he tripled against the New York Yankees. He hit .231 with Houston during four seasons where he split time with John Bateman and other catching prospects.

Due to his Mormon beliefs, he was paired on road trips with noted playboy Bo Belinsky during the 1967 season to keep tabs on his roommate.

Left available during the 1968 expansion draft, Brand was taken by the Montreal Expos where he played three more seasons and batted .247 with five steals.
