Acquired in 1982 from Milwaukee for pitcher Don Sutton, rightfielder Kevin Bass developed into one of the best outfielders in team history and was a key component in the team's exciting 1986 playoff season. A switch-hitter with power and speed, Bass was an All-Star that year, batting .311 with 20 homers and 22 stolen bases. His 20-game hitting streak in July and August was big reason the Astros pulled away from their divisional rivals to reach the playoffs.

After several more productive seasons with the team, Bass signed with the San Francisco Giants as a free agent for the 1990 season. But Bass couldn't stay away from Houston and returned in 1993 to play two seasons as a fourth outfielder. Even in a reserve role, he was one of the best hitters on the team, batting .296 over the two seasons. Bass retired after playing for the Orioles in 1995.
