A 6-6 righthander, Barlow was originally signed by Oakland but had his debut in 1975 with the Cardinals. He was sent to the Astros at the end of that season to complete a trade for outfielder Mike Easler. In 1976, Barlow in 16 games as a reliever posted a 2-2 record with a 4.50 ERA. He was sent in a mid-season deal to the Angels, along with Terry Humphrey for catcher Ed Herrmann.
Barlow completed his big league career with two years as an Angel and two years with the Blue Jays, appearing in the 1979 ALCS.
