A product of the Astros' Venezuelan academy, the outfielder had star potential but was left exposed in the 1997 expansion draft where he was claimed by the Florida Marlins then traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. While in Houston, he hit .248 in 74 games.

The two-time All-Star hit .299 with 256 homers through 2009 in a 14-year big league career with Houston, Philadelphia, the Yankees and the Angels. He also won a Gold Glove for his outfield play in 2005.
