There's no question who the two stars of Wednesday's 8-1 blowout of the New York Mets were. Chris Johnson belted two home runs and drove in six during a four-hit afternoon while Wandy Rodriguez scattered six hits over seven innings for his third win.
The series sweep boosted the Astros to within three games of .500 and pushed their season run differential to +14.
Johnson showed no mercy on Mets starter Chris Schwinden, smacking a three-run shot to left in the second and a two-run blast to left-center in the third to build a 5-0 lead. After Rodriguez allowed a run in the fourth, Johnson let others join in the fun in the three-run fifth.
Houston hitters strung together four singles and a double with Johnson, Brian Bogusevic and Jason Castro driving in the final runs. Bogusevic and Castro had two hits each in the game while Jed Lowrie added three hits and three runs scored.
The Astros can feel good through a day off Thursday before they return to action Friday night against the World Champion Cardinals. Lucas Harrell (1-2) will have a tough duel in the 7:05 Central contest with Kyle Lohse (4-0). Friday will also feature flashback uniforms from the 1960s.
Elsewhere, the Astros placed reliever Rhiner Cruz on the 15-day disabled list and called up righthander Enerio Del Rosario from Oklahoma City to take his spot.
