The Littlest Astro banged a triple and a double Friday to back the pitching of Wandy Rodrgiguez in a 6-4 victory over Cincinnati, giving Houston a modest two-game winning streak for just the second time this season.
Jose Altuve keyed a two-run third inning against Mike Leake with a triple to right field that plated Jason Castro. J.D. Martinez then singled him home for a 2-0 lead.
Houston added four more in the fourth when Chris Johnson spanked a double that scored Jed Lowrie who had started the frame with a double. Brian Bogusevic then scored on a grounder by Castro. Jordan Schafer singled to drive in Johnson and Altuve punched a double to push the lead to 6-0.
Rodriguez gave up single runs in the fifth and sixth then let the bullpen take over. The lead seemed safe until the bottom of the ninth when Fernando Abad, just up from the minors that afternoon, surrendered back-to-back homers to Jay Bruce and Devin Mesoraco before Brett Myers was called in to get the save.
Abad was called up to take the place of pitcher Kyle Weiland who was moved to the 15-day disabled list due to a sore shoulder. This leaves Houston with only four starting pitchers but, after the game, the club confirmed that Jordan Lyles would be called up to take the rotation spot.
Carlos Lee twisted his ankle on a play in the first inning and was replaced by Matt Downs. X-rays were negative and he is listed as day-to-day.
Meanwhile, the 8-12 Astros continue their weekend in Cincinnati with Lucas Harrell (1-1) scheduled to pitch in the 3:10 Saturday contest against Johnny Cueto (2-0).
