Lefthander Gio Gonzalez silenced Houston bats for seven innings while old nemesis Adam LaRoche delivered the game's only run with a fourth-inning single as the Washington Nationals blanked the Astros on Tuesday, 1-0.
Gonzalez allowed just two hits over seven innings, besting Wandy Rodriguez who gave up just one run and five hits over seven frames himself. The Nationals got shutout relief from Tyler Clippard and ex-Astro Brad Lidge to close it out with a four-hitter.
Jayson Werth smashed a triple off Rodriguez in the fourth and scored on LaRoche's bloop to left. The Astros' biggest threat came in the sixth when they put runners on first and third but it ended when J.D. Martinez bounced out.
After a surprising start the 4-7 Astros, losers of six of the last seven, will send Lucas Harrell (1-0) to the mound Wednesday night against Jordan Zimmermann (0-1). Game time is 6:05 Central as the 9-3 Nationals look to expand their early lead in the NL East.
