Astros Feeling Beachy After Win

Joy! We're 3-1!

Who are these guys? Really?? The Astros Kiddie Committee won their third straight, bouncing off the mat to tattoo the Braves on Monday night, 8-3, using guys you may not have heard of.

Start with Rule V scrub Marwin Gonzalez who had three hits and three runs scored despite winning a job as the last guy off the bench a week ago. Next, toss in Justin Maxwell who was just obtained on waivers from the Yankees on Sunday and already has his first homer as an Astro on Monday, blasting a two-run shot in the eighth to put the game on ice. Fans only know Travis Buck briefly but the outfielder started in left field and drove in a pair.

You're forgiven if you consider yourself an Astros fan and just asked "who?", "who?" and "who?" to the last three names mentioned here. For one day, at least, they're making Jeff Luhnow and his team of Slide Rulers look like rocket scientists. I keep forgetting one of them actially is one.

Most Astros fans probably tuned out after J.A. Happ gave up three runs early but the lefty settled down and lasted six innings for the win. Wesley Wright, Fernando Rodriguez and David Carpenter nailed down the final three innings without giving up a run.

With that 3-0 lead the winless Braves, behind starter Brandon Beachy probably felt, well, beachy, until their defense unraveled in the third with three errors that allowed Houston to tie it up.

J.A. Happ singled home the eventual winning run in the fourth then J.D. Martinez drove in one of two runs off Livan Hernandez (remember him?) before J.A. Maxwell (if he stays in Houston, that should be his new moniker) launched the crowning blow.

Before the game, the Astros sent lefthanded reliever Fernando Anad to AAA Oklahoma City to make room on the roster for Maxerll. Luhnow hinted he'll use that top spot in the waiver wire claiming order again while he has that advantage.

The shockingly 3-1 Astros send Kyle Weiland against the Braves on Tuesday night in a 7:05 tilt against Tommy Hanson. The Astros will don the Colt .45 jerseys to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the franchise's beginning - an 11-2 clubbing of the Cubs. Man, I'm going to miss the National League.
