Kyle Lohse held Houston to one run and three hits over five innings on Tuesday as the World Champion Cardinals silenced the Astros, 6-1, in Kissimmee. Lohse had control trouble but walked only two and gave up the lone Houston run on a solo homer by Chris Johnson.
Singles by J.B. Shuck, Carlos Lee and Jimmy Paredes were the only other offense Houston could muster.
Astros starter Jordan Lyles also pitched five innings but allowed three runs in the first inning on a two-run triple by Matt Holliday. Erik Komatsu had three hits for the Redbirds while former Astro Lance Berkman added an RBI.
Lyles was struck in the midsection by a liner from Daniel Descalso to lead off the game but shrugged it off to get his work in, finishing with seven hits and four runs allowed over five frames.
Brandon Lyon gave up a run as did Xavier Cedeno in relief roles. Brett Myers, however, had a spotless inning of work.
The Astros get an off-day on Wednesday but will resume action on Thursday with Wandy Rodriguez pitching against the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie. Houston is 9-8 with 15 games left before Opening Day.
