Kyle Weiland used his first spring start to remind everyone that he is also in the competition for the fifth starter role in Houston. He did that by tossing four no-hit innings at the New York Yankees on Monday. The righthander, acquired from Boston this winter, was efficient too. He needed just 49 pitches to get 12 outs and walked one.
George Springer, another new face in camp, stroked an RBI double to snap a 2-2 tie in the ninth. He then stole third and scored an insurance run that would turn out to be a needed policy.
Jason Castro had three hits, including an RBI single in the fourth, to continue his torrid spring. Brett Wallace chipped in two hits, including the RBI in the fifth.
Brett Myers and Brandon Lyon both allowed runs in their short stints. Jorge DeLeon gave up the final run but got the save for Fernando Rodriguez.
The Astros return to Kissimmee on Tuesday afternoon to face the Phillies at 12:05 Central time. Livan Hernandez is expected to start against Cole Hamels.
