Arroyo Quickly Quiets Astros

Wandy: Tough luck loss

Two things that happen often in late September baseball - pitching feats and quicker outcomes - happened Wednesday in Cincinnati as Bronson Arroyo spun a six-hit shutout to blank the Astros, 2-0. The game took a quick two hours, 12 minutes to complete as Arroyo needed just 91 pitches.

Arroyo's name usually doesn't come up in conversations about Astro-killers, but maybe he should be as he raised his record to 8-0 in his last nine starts against Houston.

An RBI single by Chris Heisey and a solo homer by Miguel Cairo accounted for all the scoring. The Astros got two hits each from Chris Johnson and J.R. Towles, two players who have seen a lot of bench time this month.

Wandy Rodriguez notched his 1000th career strikeout in a losing effort. He gave up just four hits over seven innings of work but saw his record fall to 11-11 for the year.

With their road record concluded at 25-56, the Astros will play their final seven games at home, beginning with a Thursday 7:05 Central contest against the Colorado Rockies. Henry Sosa (2-5) will start for Houston against young righthander Alex White (3-2).
