Houston's Matt Downs broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with a leadoff homer off Reds reliever Nick Masset, sending the Astros to a 3-2 win Monday night in Cincinnati.
Houston starter J.A. Happ had another nice outing, holding Cincy to three hits and two runs, fanning nine in his six innings.
The Reds got on the board in the first with a Brandon Phillips solo shot off Happ, then took a 2-0 lead in the second on a Todd Frazier RBI double.
Redleg starter Travis Wood held Houston scoreless through his five innings, but Houston rallied in the sixth against reliever Logan Ondrusek. J.D. Martinez singled and Carlos Lee walked to open the frame, then Downs reached on an error to plate Martinez. Lee came home when Clint Barmes hit into a fielder's choice to even the score.
On Tuesday, Houston's Bud Norris (6-10, 3.68) takes the hill against the Redlegs' Homer Bailey (8-7, 4.43). First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m. CDT.
