Astros Nipped For 100th Loss

Altuve: Fans in last gasp

In their first 50 seasons, the Houston Astros have won 100 games in a season just once (1998). Now they have a 100-loss season to go with it. The milestone came Saturday at Wrigley Field in a 2-1 loss to the Cubs.

Both teams got a first inning run aided by errors from the other side then Bryan LaHair tagged a Henry Sosa pitch over the center field wall that held up for the rest of the game. Sosa walked four batters in the first inning yet lasted for six innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Houston had chances in both the eighth and the ninth innings to plate the tying run but, as has often happened in a 100-loss season, the Astros couldn't come up with the hit that they needed. In the ninth, Jose Altuve struck out with the bases loaded and one out then Humberto Quintero grounded out to end the game.

I keep wondering why two teams going nowhere continue to play so may veterans instead of giving youth a chance. That will seem to be true again on Sunday when Brett Myers (5-13) takes on Ryan Dempster (10-12) in the 1:20 Central series finale.
