It was all set up so perfectly. The Astros were to set a new record for losses with former teammates Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence landing the knockout blows for Philadelphia. But Brett Myers had other ideas.
Myers has finally found his groove in September and shut down his former team, 5-1, Monday night. He scattered six hits over eight innings and added two of his own to the offense while claiming his fifth victory. Mark Melancon finished it out in the ninth.
J.D. Martinez and Humberto Quintero spanked three hits apiece while Carlos Lee popped a two-run homer off Oswalt into the Crawfords to pace the Houston attack.
Oswalt was also the victim of some shoddy defense behind him although the generous scorer did not hand out any errors. Sloppy glovework contributed to the two-run fourth that turned the game Houston's way after a Pete Orr RBI single gave the Phillies the early lead.
Both teams return Tuesday night for an encore with another Phormer Phillie, J.A. Happ (5-15) taking the hill against fellow lefty Cole Hamels (14-7). The first pitch is at 7:05 Central time.
