Wandy Rodriguez tried his best to imitate a Rockies pitcher on Wednesday but still left as a Houston Astro. Rodriguez allowed six runs and ten hits as the Astros were swept in Colorado, 7-6, in ten innings.
Houston's lineup, with Jose Altuve and J.D. Martinez on the bench, kept pace with Colorado's until the 10th when Troy Tulowitzki was walked by Aneury Rodriguez, advanced to third on a single and scored on a wild pitch to end the game.
The Rockies are desperately trying to claw back into the NL West race as Arizona and San Francisco continue to stumble. The Astros are just trying to decide how to get younger and cheaper for next season, thus the talks with Colorado after they claimed Wandy on waivers earlier in the week. It appears a noon Thursday deadline will now pass with the lefty still a member of the only big league club he has known.
Still, it's understandable how such talk can play with a pitcher's mind and Wandy was roughed up for four runs in the first despite the Astros supporting him with four runs in the first two innings against Aaron Cook. Wandy settled down and allowed just a two-run homer to Carlos Gonzalez the rest of the way although he struggled practically every inning.
Five Astros had multi-hit games, including Matt Downs who started for Altuve. Clint Barmes homered and Brian Bogusevic had three hits to raise his average up to .329.
The Astros also placed reliever Sergio Escalona on the disabled list with tendinitis. To take his spot, Houston called up Juan Abreu from Oklahoma City. A part of the Michael Bourn trade, Abreu has not appeared in the majors before.
The next stop comes in San Francisco where Henry Sosa (0-2) is expected to pitch the Thursday opener of a four-game weekend series. Ryan Vogelsong (10-3) will throw for the Giants in the 9:15 Central start.
