It's been a bad year for Brett Myers and things got uglier Monday with the wind blowing out at Coors Field. Myers gave up six runs in the first inning and a solo homer to Carlos Gonzalez in the second to spot Colorado a touchdown lead early as the Rockies held on for a 9-5 decision.
Myers hung around to complete six innings but his rough start all but assured his 13th loss of the year despite the screwy weather which included some light rain in the middle innings.
Houston collected 15 hits including three each from J.D. Martinez and Brian Bogusevic but could manage just one run for the first eight frames, a solo homer to left by Bogusevic who has lifted his average to .311 after hovering around .200 in spot duty for most of the year.
The Astros made it interesting in the ninth when Matt Downs launched a three-run pinch-hit homer off J.C. Romero and Jimmy Paredes later added a sacrifice fly. Clint Barmes struck out with two aboard to end the game.
Jordan Schafer, the newest Astro by way of Atlanta and the disabled list, had an 0-for-4 debut for his new club and misplayed a wind-blown double by Colorado pitcher Jhoulys Chacin that plated the last two runs of the disastrous first.
Bud Norris (6-8) will try to snap the two-game losing streak on Tuesday night when he opposes rookie Alex White (1-0) who is coming off the 60-day disabled list. The first pitch will be at 7:40 Central.
