Michael Bourn spanked a two-run triple in the tenth inning to topple West Division leading San Diego on Thursday night, 6-3. Jeff Keppinger, who had three RBIs, chased Bourn home with an insurance run then Matt Lindstrom closed out for his 19th save.
Jason Michaels got things started with a solo homer off Jon Garland to lead off the second. After Garland walked the bases full, Keppinger slapped a two-run single to right for an early 3-0 edge.
Brian Moehler gave up just one run and left in the sixth before Wilton Lopez gave up a pair of runs in the seventh that tied the game.
Both teams worked out of minor jams to send it to extra innings. In the 10th, Luke Gregerson relieved Heath Bell and issued two-out walks to Humberto Quintero and pinch-hitter Oswaldo Navarro. Bourn made him pay with a triple to the expanse in Petco Park's right-center field to make a winner of Chris Sampson.
The Padres will send Mat Latos (8-4) to the mound on Friday in a 9:05 Central start against Roy Oswalt (5-10), who hopes to bounce back from his worst start of the season in Arlington.
