Randy Wolf survived six hits and three walks over five innings without allowing a run Sunday and his Houston teammates helped him just enough to blank New York, 4-0, inching closer to the .500 mark and wild card relevancy.
Ty Wigginton homered off Oliver Perez to give the Astros an early lead then Houston tacked on three extra runs in the fourth on four consecutive hits, three of them doubles. Wigginton, Hunter Pence and Darin Erstad each had multiple-hit afternoons.
A quartet of relievers joined in on the shutout, including closer Jose Valverde who worked for the third consecutive game.
Since getting swept by Pittsburgh, the Astros have won seven of their last nine games. Brian Moehler (6-4) hopes to keep the momentum going as he opens a three-game series at Chicago's Wrigley Field in a 6:05 Central start on Monday. All-Star Ryan Dempster (12-4) will pitch for the first-place Cubs.
