Five Out Of Six Ain't Bad

Backe: Streakbreaker.

The Astros' five-game winning streak and other various streaks came to an end Thursday night in an 8-3 loss to Washington but, rather than dwelling on the loss, think about the very successful homestand just completed, one that saw Houston leapfrog the Brewers into third place and get within shouting distance of the Cubs and Cardinals, both of whom have looked rather vulnerable since they ventured away from their home parks.

Speaking of which, the Astros begin a 10-day, 10-game road trip that will take them to exotic lands like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Arlington before they come back to Houston for an important weeklong homestand.

(As an aside, what were the schedulemakers thinking having the Astros off for both Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day this month? Could there be two better days to sell tickets to the old ballgame? Yet MLB just takes those dates out of play even though the Astros are already in town. Stupid. Just stupid.)

Next up, Brian Moehler (0-0) gets his first chance in the rotation, starting Friday night in Los Angeles against Derek Lowe (2-2), beginning at 9:40 Central time.
